WEEK 8

Welcome to WEEK 8.  This week's activities include:

Final preparations for Florida Bandmasters Association Student Conductor Assessment:

Over the past 7 weeks, you've prepared for:
  • a verbal presentation of a score summary (historical and theoretical information)
  • conducting a performance of the selected Student Conductor Performance
The combination of these two activities will be the culminating event of this curriculum.

Ask your band director for a specific time in which you can deliver your discussion/performance to him/her, the band, as well as invited guests.  You might consider inviting other music teachers on your campus (choir director, orchestra director), school administrators, parents, etc.
If your band has a concert scheduled prior to your Music Performance Assessment, this would be another chance to present the discussion/performance.

Remember to video-record each and every performance.  Take notes on successes as well as areas for improvement.

Journal Reflection:
Record your thoughts and feelings on the Student Conductor Curriculum as a whole.  Was the training different from what you anticipated?  In what ways?  In which areas do you feel you learned the most?  Are you more interested in the conducting activity than previously?

Conclusions:
Congratulations on completing the Student Conductor Curriculum!  Your hard-work is certain to pay dividends in your musicianship.  Make sure to thank your band for their time and talents.  Also, be sure to thank your band director for his/her time and mentorship.

It is my sincere hope that you've enjoyed this process.  If I can ever be of service to you, please feel free to contact me.

Musically,

Chip Birkner
